How a Heat Pump Heats Your Home Through a Kansas Winter

A heat pump heats your home by moving heat rather than making it: refrigerant absorbs thermal energy that exists in outdoor air — even cold air — and releases it inside. Because moving heat takes far less energy than generating it, a heat pump can deliver two to three units of heat for every unit of electricity it consumes. Modern cold-climate models maintain useful output well below 0°F, which covers the overwhelming majority of Wichita winter hours.

How can a heat pump pull heat out of cold air?

"Cold" air still contains thermal energy — physics says air holds extractable heat all the way down to absolute zero (−460°F). A heat pump's outdoor coil runs refrigerant colder than the outside air, so heat flows from the air into the refrigerant. The compressor then squeezes that refrigerant to a high temperature and the indoor coil releases the heat into your ductwork. It's the same cycle your refrigerator runs, pointed at your living room.

What happens during the defrost cycle?

When the outdoor coil runs below freezing in humid air, frost builds on it. The system periodically reverses itself for a few minutes to melt that frost — you'll see steam rise off the outdoor unit and hear a whoosh as the reversing valve shifts. What is backup heat and when does it run?

Yes. Standard models keep heating well below 32°F, and cold-climate models are rated to produce useful heat at −13°F and below. Output declines as temperature drops, which is what backup heat is for.

Why does my heat pump blow air that feels cool?

Heat pump supply air typically runs 90–110°F — warmer than the room, but cooler than a gas furnace's blast, and cooler than your skin, so it can feel drafty near a register. Longer, gentler cycles are normal and actually heat more evenly.

How long do heat pumps last in Kansas?
